AT LAST NIGHT’S National Television Awards Bill Roache paid tribute to his Coronation Street co-star and on-screen wife Anne Kirkbride, who passed away on Monday.

In a moving speech, Roache said Kirkbride’s family and the cast of Coronation Street were “deeply touched” by the outpouring of love and noted that they shared fans’ grief.

With her husky voice and trademark spectacles, the nation took Deirdre to their hearts. As Deirdre and Ken, we were soulmates. And despite what was thrown at us we found one another and always made our way back together.

He ended his speech by saying, “I love you, Anne.”
